Barry University was founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters and is a Catholic scholarly community dedicated to liberal arts education. Students are instructed in intellectual tradition, integration of study that is grounded in faith. The school was starting its second year when Pearl Harbor was bombed, bringing fear and uncertainty, shortages and rationing. Despite the turmoil in the country during that period, Barry University grew and expanded, and by the time they celebrated their 20th anniversary, enrollment had grown to 800 students. Mother Gerald Barry, the college’s name sake, passed away in November of 1961. DeVry University
DeVry University began in 1931 when Dr. Herman DeVry established DeForest Training School in order to prepare students for careers in motion pictures, electronics, radio and television. During the 1940s, DeVry was selected by the United States Army Air Corps to train instructors on the use of electronic devices. The name of the university was changed to DeVry Technical Institute in 1953. Florida Gulf Coast University
Florida Gulf Coast University began when then Governor Lawton Chiles signed legislation in 1991, authorizing a new university to be located in Southwest Florida. Private landowners offered more than 20 sites for the location of the university, but the Board of Regents chose land offered by Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico, Inc. The 760-acre site was located just east of Interstate 75. The university was developed to address growing higher education needs that included the use of technology and multi-year contracts as opposed to tenure for faculty. Today, there are almost 14,100 students enrolled at the college, studying in 82 programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist or doctorate level.
Lutgert College of Business
The Lutgert College of Business honors Raymond and Beverly Lutgert who donated $5 million in 2007 for a new academic building. Raymond Lutgert, who died in 2010 at the age of 90, was the founder of The Lutgert Company, which is today operated by his son, Scott. In 2008, Florida Gulf Coast University dedicated the College of Business and the building that houses it after the Lutgerts. The school is dedicated to providing business students with knowledge based in analysis and creativity, but that also includes application, communication and teamwork.

The Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University offers a Bachelor of Science in Management with a Human Resource Management concentration. The program prepares students for success in today’s business world with a focus on the growing need for global focus. Graduates are qualified for entry-level positions in human resource management upon completion of the program. Students must complete all common prerequisites with a GPA of 2.4 or higher and must attend a Freshman Transition Workshop or Transfer Student Orientation.

Florida Institute of Technology
Florida Institute of Technology began as the University of Melborne, when three women – Virginia Wood, Elizabeth Nutting and Margaret Dayton – paved the way for higher education in Brevard County in 1954. Brevard Engineering College was founded by Dr. Jerome Keuper in order to offer educational opportunities to NASA staff at Cape Canaveral. Classes for the engineering school and the University of Melborne were held at Eau Gallie Junior High School. In 1960, 40 acres and a building were donated to the university, and in 1961, for the sum of $10, the University of Melborne deeded the property, now known as 150 West University Boulevard to the Brevard Engineering College. In 1966, the school name changed to Florida Institute of Technology. Today, the campus is 130 subtropical acres that includes a beautiful Botanical Garden.
Nathan M. Bisk College of Business
Nathan M. Bisk founded Bisk Education in 1971, and is a nationally known author of taxation, accounting and auditing texts. Mr. Bisk is a Trustee at Florida Tech. The Bisk College of Business educates and empowers students to become leaders in the business world with a focus on innovation, diversity, ethics and leadership. Students are provided many business opportunities in order to provide hands-on experience in today’s complex business world.
Human Resources Administration Minor
Florida Tech offers an online minor in Human Resources Administration to students enrolled at the college. The program encourages focused study outside the student’s major so no more than nine credit hours may be in courses required for the major. At least nine credit hours of the minor must be taken at Florida Tech, and a GPA of 2.0 is required in order to receive recognition for the minor. Courses include:

Human Resource Management Major
Students have the option to add a Human Resource Management major to their Bachelor of Business Administration program at FIU. The program provides students with a broad overview of organizational management. Students develop and apply planning, recruitment and selection practices using analysis and evaluation to determine which candidates will provide the best return on investment for an organization. Students also develop skills in developing training practices and retention strategies, while also learning about compensation, benefits and rewards that will provide the necessary motivation for staff. Students must take 60 credits of lower division and 60 credits of upper division courses, passing all human resource management courses with a “C” or better.
Master of Science in Human Resource Management
The Master of Science in Human Resource Management at FIU delivers a comprehensive curriculum that provides students with the skills necessary to connect the needs of an organization with its workforce. It is a one-year accelerated program with weekend classes. The program is designed for those who are currently working the HR profession and for qualified undergraduates who have an interest in human resources. Students must provide a current resume, statement of purpose and two letters of recommendation. Students must have maintained a Florida residence for the previous twelve months.

Florida State University
Florida State University offers a distinctive academic environment on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state. In 1823, Territorial Legislature reserved two townships, one east and the other west of the Suwannee River. In 1854, the City of Tallahassee established the Florida Institute, a school for boys, hoping the state would take over the school as one of the seminaries. The first offer of the land to the state was not successful, but in 1856, Francis Eppes, who was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and the Mayor of Tallahassee, successfully convinced the state to locate one of the seminaries at the Florida Institute. In 1963, the name of the school was changed to The Florida Military and Collegiate Institute after the addition of a military section designed to train cadets. During the Civil War, cadets from the school fought in the Battle of Natural Bridge, helping to make Tallahassee the only Confederate capitol East of the Mississippi not to be captured during the war. As a result of their bravery, Florida State University’s Army ROTC unit is one of only three authorized to display a battle streamer with its flag, which bears the words Natural Bridge 1865. After the war, however, Union troops descended on Tallahassee, occupying many buildings, including those on campus.
In 1883, the school became the Literary College of the University of Florida, but the connection to the university was short-lived. In 1905, the University of Florida in Gainesville was designated as a men’s school while Florida State University became a women’s school and was renamed Florida State College for Women. After World War II, veterans returned seeking higher education and the school became co-educational to meet the needs of those returning from war. It was renamed Florida State University in 1947. Today, 40,000 students are enrolled at FSU, and each year the college awards over 2,000 graduate and professional degrees.
College of Business
The College of Business was founded in 1950 and, despite the fact that it is one of the youngest business schools in the country, has a reputation for excellence that led to its becoming one of the largest. The college has an international reputation and offers individual attention from faculty. Many alumni are respected corporate leaders making a name in the global marketplace.
Human Resource Management
The College of Business offers a bachelor’s level degree in Human Resource Management. The program is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level positions in human resource management. Students are qualified for positions in private businesses and governmental agencies with knowledge in benefits, compensation, staffing and planning. The program has limited access requiring students to meet admission requirements before acceptance. Students must have completed at least 52 semester credit hours and have a GPA of 2.90 or greater, although the GPA requirement is subject to change annually. Students must have completed the following courses with a “C” or better:

- Principles of Microeconomics
- Microcomputer Applications for Business or Spreadsheets for Business
- Calculus for Business and Non-Physical Sciences
